EV Hubs Mission Grove

what if: projects in collaboration with LB Waltham Forest have explored options for establishing new Rapid EV Hubs in two locations on Mission Grove in Walthamstow. The objective of the study is to test ideas for a flagship Hub that will serve as a central component of a strategic network of public EV charging points throughout Waltham Forest. The Council aims to deliver a facility that not only provides EV charging points but also supports low-emission transport modes and encourages users to engage with local businesses and amenities while their vehicles are charging.

As EV charging infrastructure becomes increasingly common in urban areas across the borough, the study proposes key principles to enhance the value of streets and public spaces where these Hubs are located. These core principles include: implementing ethical and sustainable EV charging infrastructure; creating accessible green and blue public spaces; providing local amenities and spaces for active travel modes and E-mobility; developing an environmental strategy focused on emission reductions and climate resilience; and fostering an engaging local environment by addressing site-specific issues and collaborating with local stakeholders.

The proposed hubs integrate Rapid EV charge points with a range of components including SUDs infrastructure, tree planting and greening, places to rest and spend time plus a multi-functional canopy structure. The canopy acts as spine for the new development by providing shade and shelter for hub users and the public and having the potential to generate energy and harvest rainwater for the site. The structure can also house amenity spaces such as commercial units or community facilities that bring benefits to the local neighbourhood.
